Scar therapy is a non-invasive physical therapy developed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis and adhesions. I use a range of specialist scar massage techniques, fascial release and self-care advice to promote and support a healthy recovery.
Symptoms treated
Scar therapy can help with a range of symptoms arising from scar tissue. This may include pain, tightness and restricted movement. Sensitivity in the area may be affected leading to numbness, itching or hypersensitivity. There may be swelling in the area that can be reduced. We may be able to work on the appearance of the scar however we can never make a scar disappear.
Initial assessment
During your initial appointment we will discuss what led to your scar what bothers you and you would like to work on improving. I will gather information about your medical history and lifestyle to support ensuring the treatment is personalised to you and your needs. If you are happy to I will take photographs so we can record progress. I will palpate the area to feel the texture of the skin and underlying tissue observing how it moves and ask you how it feels.
Treatment techniques and home care
The specific massage techniques I use are gentle yet powerful. Some of the techniques are described as pumping, applying and releasing a gentle pressure to promote movement and circulation in the tissues. I may incorporate some gentle stretching that may be passive or ask you to move or breath to facilitate the tissue stretching. Some of the techniques focus on working on small areas at a time where the tissue is rigid and or feels stuck to encourage it to move and lift. There are also techniques to target the nervous system to address numbness and itching. Throughout the treatment I will be checking in to ask how it feels and adjust to ensure you remain comfortable. I will give you advice on things you can do at how such as self-massage or stretches depending upon what your goals and needs are.
