Paul is an Electrical Engineer in a factory installing, maintaining and repairing the equipment. He has recently moved to a new factory, unfortunately, he started to experience pain on the outside of his elbows, tenderness in the forearms and a weakened grip all exacerbated by his work when using tools.  It was diagnosed by the GP as Tennis elbow also known as lateral epicondylitis.  It is typically caused by repetitive wrist or forearm activities such as tennis or practical work gripping tools. Paul was experiencing symptoms in both arms which is unusual.

Initial Symptoms and Traditional Treatments

The pain progressed from a slight ache to a sharp sensation, particularly when gripping tools. Due to the condition affecting both arms, it wasn’t easy to rest and adjust working practices. Also, sleeping was hindered as it was difficult to get comfortable at night.  Initial treatments included rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications, but relief was minimal.   Paul was keen to try something quick to enable him to sleep and work without pain.

Treatment Experience: Sessions and Sensations

The treatment began with an initial assessment, during which I identified key points associated with the elbow’s pain.  Each session involved the insertion of thin needles into specific locations around the elbow and other areas.  Needling to the corresponding area in the neck and thumb was used to provide pain relief.  Needles were applied around the elbow to promote healing and reduce inflammation through increased circulation and promoting the body’s own healing response.  Trigger points, areas of intense muscle tightness were identified through touch and needled to manipulate the muscle to relax.

Although some needles caused a slight sting, the sensation quickly subsided. Sessions lasted approximately 30 minutes; they were held 3 to 4 days apart for 3 sessions in total.

Observations of Improvement

Noticeable improvements began to emerge after the initial session. Pain levels decreased, enabling Paul to have a good night’s sleep. Paul reported reduced stiffness, increased elbow mobility, and less pain gripping tools.

Acupuncture can be a helpful treatment for many people by addressing pain, muscle imbalances and working with the body’s healing processes.
